A Day in Belfast

Visitors to the shop who are not local to Belfast are always asking us for recommendations for other places to visit on a trip to Belfast. Man o man, where do we start?! There is just so much going on at the minute in Belfast that this could almost become a weekly post. So if you’re planning on making a day of your trip to Belfast or even a weekend, here a few pointers. Places that we hope you’ll enjoy as much as your trip to Maven.

1.     Coffee at Established

 Found in the Cathedral Quarter, Established Coffee’s minimal surroundings let the coffee and food take centre stage. The coffee is consistently excellent, and the food is always seasonal and super tasty. 

2.    Wine at Ox Cave

 If you haven’t managed to snag a table at Michelin starred, Ox, then not to fear.  Ox Cave (located just beside the main restaurant) will always be a winner.  The staff’s knowledge of wine is second to none, so let them choose something special for you. Order a plate of the Aged Comte with truffled honey and you’ll be one really happy person.  Oh, and it was designed by the super talented Martin & Orla from Oscar & Oscar so it looks pretty fine into the bargain.

3.    Shop at Envoy

 Stocking labels such as Sofie D’Hoore, Orlsow and Margaret Howell, it’s no wonder Envoy has a discerning following from across the world.  Owner, and taste-maker Ruth Spence, will take one look at you and instantly know what is going to look good on you. 

4.    Dine at Noble

 Just a few miles outside of Belfast, in the seaside town of Holywood, the Noble team have created a slick and super friendly offering.  Pick literally anything off the menu and you’ll have no regrets.  What I love most is that its fine dining, but delivered in the most relaxed way.  And taking the train out to the coast always makes me feel like I’m on my holidays.

5.    Lunch at Bia Rebel

 Jay Rayner described it in The Guardian as ‘As an £8 bowl of ramen deserving of poetry’.  He wasn’t lying.  My favourite is the Celtic Beef Ramen but I tried the Bimimbap last weekend and that might be my new favourite thing. Its BYO and cosy as anything.

6. Visit The Naughton Gallery

Located at Queen’s University, the Naughton Gallery is a visual arts space which presents a contemporary programme of local and international work. Curator, Ben Crothers champions diversity, inclusively and excellence with every exhibition. The gallery also runs a program of events including a book club, Art in the AM talks and workshops.
