The Home

I find that the most interesting homes are the ones that really reflect the personalities of the people who live there. I love walking into someone’s home and not being quite sure where to look first, seeing lots of little moments that are eye-catching and engaging. A home should never be finished, but rather a space that is constantly evolving and changing as the lives of the inhabitants change.

Ferm Living have an apartment in Copenhagen which they call ‘The Home’. It's a space where they can show off this season’s collections in a homely setting rather than a show room. We were lucky enough to get a look around it when we visited in August and it is utterly sublime. We wanted to share some images with you and we’ve highlighted a few elements that, we think, make this a really special space.

Apart from the obvious factors like the high ceilings, generous windows and gorgeous original features there are many things that any of us could do at home.

COLOUR The paint choices here are just breath taking. Not only the colours, but also where the paint has been applied. We do not have to paint woodwork and ceilings white. Try painting your woodwork the same colour as the walls or go for a contrasting colour. Why not make the ceiling a feature?

STACKS OF BOOKS AND MAGAZINES Books and magazines don’t always belong on a shelf. Stack them against a wall, on a chair etc and keep things unfussy. A nice magazine cover is like a little piece of art all on its own.

COLLECTIONS OF OBJECTS Here they have curated what looks like the ultimate gallery wall. The way the art has been hung is perfect. The perimeter of the gallery is a strict rectangle but within that perimeter is a sort of ‘ordered disorder’. There are beautiful objects galore in this space. Sometimes, if you come across something beautiful you might just have to have it, even if it has no real use. A big rock or a seashell or a perfect vase. You’ll know it when you see it.

NOT MATCHY Nothing in this space ‘matches’ but it all works together. That is what keeps it interesting. Your eye is interested but challenged a little bit too. You can’t ‘read’ the room in one quick glance.

CONFIDENCE These rooms are brave and gutsy. The designer has played with colour, scale and materials and the overall effect is stunning.
